21

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Oh to be 21 again yeeha. I used to take girls out to the movie theatre every weekend – a different girl each weekend that is. I haven’t done that in years, the last time I went to the movie theatre was to see a film called 21, and those old picture houses have changed a lot since my day. I didn’t like it much, the smell, the noise, but I liked the film so I watched it again from a rental place this weekend.

It’s no wonder I liked it – it’s about blackjack and based on a true story. I’m not sure what ‘based on’ means though – either it is true or not, I wish they’d shoot straight from the hip about that one. But anyway, I hope it is true because it’s quite the story. These young lads, intelligent lads, train up real good for months and they train not to play Classic Blackjack but to count cards, a fools game in my opinion and so the movie proves.

Predictably they go to Vegas and raid it for all it’s got. They hit the big bucks and seem unstoppable winning at every table, they buy sweet new suits and boots and the main guy, Ben, wins enough to get him through med school. But the silly young’ens forgot one thing, greed lives in all of us and no matter how much you win, or how often, you’ll never win more than the casino. So of course they came to blows when casino security cracked on to what they were gettin’ up to.

At the beginning of the film I envied the youngster’s (Ben’s) intelligence and integrity, but as it went on I figured even the good can go bad when that greedy little money bug strikes.

Set ‘em up Joe

Last night I took my Blackjack skills back on the road and oh boy I’m good. These online tables have been good to an old timer and now I’m someone to be reckoned with. With sarsaparillas all round we played some good games. It was heating up and I was clutching my holster getting ready for someone to blow but after a few whiskeys to wet the old pallet we were getting on like a house on fire.

That’s another difference between playing online and playing less virtually – if someone’s got a problem with the cut of your jib it’s more than just keyboards and mice that get slammed. Me and the old gang had a right old time though – harry was there, he’s a very good friend of a friend of mine, and quite the player too. By the end of the night we were all sailing Liverpool‘s Mersey and recounting our days back on the Blackjack scene in the windy city.

We’d play till the early hours surrounded by ladies with the longest legs you’d ever seen in smart feather dresses – they don’t make ‘em like that anymore. Then the next day we’d wake up and do it all over again. We had no cares in the world. Things aren’t all bad now though – yea the ladies turned into wives but Blackjack went online. Playing a game from the comfort of your own home, that’s the ticket. I don’t think I could handle those legs anymore anyway. It’s good to know I can get back on the old horse though and play a good game with ma pals.

Trouble, trouble, trouble

Friday, August 12th, 2011

So everyone’s got their feathers all ruffled by these riotin’ kids in the city. I watched a little of it on the old telly-box and I must say I was thoroughly underwhelmed. Them crazy cats ain’t nothing to worry about, they’ll run right outta steam just as soon as they realise that lootin and jackassery won’t get them nowhere as fast as gamblin will.

They think they’re having a hard time? What about a 2 week losing streak! They reckon as benefit cuts is the scariest thing they gotta deal with? What about the awful 16..

Just saying its name sends shivers down this old man’s spine. The terrible 16, the worst hand in Blackjack. 70% chance o’ losing no matter what you do. And this star-crossed hapless blackjack man had the misfortune to get one but mere days ago.

So, what do you do? How do you change Lady Luck’s mind when she’s arm-in-arm cavorting with the dealer? Well I racked my brains. I thought back to my very first blackjack learnin’ and it struck me outta nowhere. ‘Boy,’ I said ‘You got three options: hit, stand or surrender. And surrender’s not an option.’

As I could recall, hittin gave me a better chance than standin so hit I did. Plucked up my last reserves of courage and hit away.

I lost.

And those kids think they got problems.

Blackjack games

“Poor yourself an old red river spoonful, Kojack, it’s time to play some blackjack games.” – Yvette Fielding

You know, the older I get, the more I seem to get behind and even in-live with the cosmos. Yeah, those lucky stars way up in the sky seem to talk a little clear into my third ear. I feel like I know when good tiems are heading my way, and also when the clouds are gathering for some kind of losing storm. And right now the weather report says ‘A-OK’.

Sometimes when things go your way you can’t help but wanna play a few more games of blackjack. After all, that’s the reason you’re feeling so good, blue. But what you’ve gotta be careful of is spitting too many times into the old Mississippi wind. Hey, ain’t nothing worse than a faceful of your own cocky gob…

What I’m saying to you blackjack players is not to get too confident when you play. Sure, you can have a good time with the cards for a little while, but don’t you forget that those cards will just as soon slap you on the face than pat your head and clal you pretty. Ain’t no doubt it’s plain to see…

This summer when I hit the card table – in both life and cards – I’ll be saying a little mantra to myself to keep me down on this old Earth. It’s real simple but it’s for me and me alone. I’d hate to share my secret with you, dear readers, but secrets are called secrets because they are secrets. And sometimes things real are that simple.

So slip on your old crocodile shoes and head to the river for a barney, because gosh darn it you’re going to need to listening to the flow of Old Father Water as the find your own little head-saying.

Hey, you should listen when your head talks to you. That’s what it’s there for…

Winds o’ change

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Ah yeah, as the good ol’ spring winds pass into the ether, summer blows into town with it’s suitcase and a newspaper under its arm. He’s here to stay, we hope, but does the weather bring the blackjack player luck?

Typical blackjack is played indoors. Four suits, four walls. Nowadays, things have changed just a lil, and you can play anywhere you want thanks to online blackjack. Seems all you need to do anything these days is a laptop computer and an idea. Lucky for me, my ideas involved getting a laptop computer just as the craze for blackjack games on the internet hit. Now that’s what I call a break…

Sometimes, yeah, I like to sit outside and shoot a few cards while sipping a cool rum and diet coke. I love the heat on my back as I flip the cards. Do I win? Well, so long as Mr. Sun keeps his hat on, I can’t lose!

I know other peeps who don’t like playing outside so much. Smoky Joe won’t play anywhere other than bed, and Dan Ham from Chippenham likes his legs in front of his antique fireplace when he asks lady luck for a favour. Just the way it goes, brother. Just the way it goes…

So this summer, here’s wishing all the online blackjack players a little bit of luck. But not just with the cards. Life too. Sometimes life can be a cold time, whatever the weather, and I’d like to raise a glass to all those affected by whatever’s going on in their lives. Hey, everyone has their time in the sun. The same goes for blackjack when the cards are shining and when they’re wet and stormy. I just got one little bitty word of advice: always wear lotion in the sun.

Success can drive a good man bad. I know that much…

Summer in the city?

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Well, things are looking mighty rosy for this old-timer. For once lady luck was smiling on me, and a hot streak saw me raking in a tidy sum. As you’d imagine, this means a certain other lady is smiling on me too – but only ’cause she’s expecting I’ll spoil her. See, she’s got her heart set on the annual Big Hoedown on the North Wales coast. The bright lights of Llandudno.

Meanwhile, yours truly would rather use that little windfall for a summer in the city. Any city. Hey, maybe with a bit more of this luck I could whisk us away across the pond to one of the Big Three: Atlantic City, Reno, or even Las Vegas. In the autumn of our lives, we could really do with some Stateside sunshine, while those showgirls are sure to do wonders for my health!

So you’ll understand if I’m a little reluctant to jump in the old faithful RV and gun it down the A55 to a land where seagulls snatch the chips from your unwitting hands. Not to mention gambling was illegal there until the mid seventies – I remember the shock when I went on a stag weekend in my youth – so you can hardly expect many high rolling blackjack games to come my way. Just the miles and miles of seafront arcades, the 2p machines, the plastic horse race, the robot fortune tellers…

But hey, as the Man in Black said, sometimes you just gotta walk the line.

Making the money add up…

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Playing cards ain’t quite as simple as knowing when to hold ‘em, when to fold ‘em, and when to get your trainers on for a run. Like the man said, you never count your money, while you’re sitting at the table – they’ll be time enough for that afterwards.

I couldn’t agree with Kenny Rogers anymore. It’s important that when you’re at that table playing online blackjack you have nothing on your mind but the cards, and beating your opponent. You see, if you bring your baggage and bank balance ot the table with you, before long it’ll be ruling your hand and the way you play. Before longer you’ll be looking for sensible debt loans rather than an Ace to dig you out of a hole.

There’s been trouble in the past between me and money, that’s for sure. Been days where I preferred to sleep in a bus shelter than go home. Thing is, I wasn’t even playing at the time – I only play blackjack online when my finances allow. My tough times with money have been purely caused by tough jobs and tougher luck. Sometimes fate ain’t as easy to call as a flip of a card…

But what you’ve gotta remember is that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So that means if one day you’re luck is down, you better strap yourself in because pretty soon it’s going to be up again. That’s how it works in this world, and that’s how I like it!

So as the days get a little lighter, little warmer, little sweater, don’t let yourself overheat. Just remember that whatever good or bad days come as you play, there’s always God Almighty ready and waiting to bring you down a peg or two or, and here’s the fun part, raise you up to sit on his cloud with him a little bit.

Keep on truckin’.

Hitting the wheel

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

A sound piece of advice I picked up from a very wise man when I was kid was: “Don’t keep playing the same game. You’ll soon run out of luck.”

Now I’ve tried to keep that little pearl of wisdom in the back of my mind whenever I’ve felt the urge to go a little crazy and overstay my welcome with Lady Luck. So it was with a heavy heart and a wallet not as heavy as I feel it could have been that I switched from blackjack to roulette just after Christmas.

Roulette is a completely different animal to blackjack, but it’s one that deserves to be loved all the same. There’s a little bit more luck to roulette. Not quite as strategic as the cards. You can’t control your own destiny as much, nor run from it. That little ball makes all the rules; it’s no card you can decide to dispose.

The game I play, Low Stake Roulette, is as simple as they come. I don’t ask too many questions of the Gods when I place my bets. In return I get no answers. That’s how I like it with the games I don’t know. That’s how they like it with me.

In a strange little way it feels like cheating on a loved one when I switch games. The wife notices a change in me – as if I’m coming home late all of a sudden or smelling of perfume. It’s strange how my demeanour changes, and I hope my luck doesn’t follow.

I reckon I keep spinning the wheel for two weeks. Say hello to the New Year as a roulette player, then make my excuses and leave. I’d like to return home to Mother Blackjack, but it depends on how my luck runs. That’s always the way.

Ho ho ho

I think it goes without saying that Christmas can sometimes be a blackjack player’s best time of year, but also his worst. Christmas is a volatile breeding ground of emotion. On the one hand, it’s a time of joy and you have that little bit extra confidence with which to play big hands. On the other, you can be reckless. Take this tale from 1970…

It was Christmas and I found myself at my brother Robert’s house. Bob wasn’t much of a gambler but he sure liked to play. A little too much, perhaps, but I’ve learned that you should never question a man’s enthusiasm to lose, especially when it’s for money. Anyway, me and Bob were left at his kitchen table in the dead of night, drinking whisky red and putting the world to rights. I was winning, comfortably, when all of a sudden my… Christmas cheer… got the better of me.

I played hard on a pair of eights. Ridiculous. Bob wiped me out with what I remember being a simple straight. I should never have played that hand. Of course, when you’ve been playing cards for as long as I have you don’t remember the victories, just the defeats. I went to bed feeling a like I’d gambled my Christmas cheer that year, and I don’t think I got it back until 1975…

So my advice to players this coming Christmas is simple: know your limits. Don’t go in too hard, don’t go in too soft. The moment you feel it’s getting late, it is late, and it’s time for you to hit the hay. Don’t let yourself be swayed by any sentimentality towards the time of year. It’s the cards, not the calendar, that’ll determine your fate.

Happy Christmas.

A good table

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Now some of you might find this post a little strange, but I believe the true blackjack fiends out there will know exactly where I’m coming from with this: sometimes the most important thing a player can have is a good table.

I don’t mean one of those crazy luxury things that are all plastic you can buy that’s made to look like the real thing. They’re too futuristic for my liking! I’m talking a big, thick solid oak table that’ll take the weight of just about anything. Now that’s a table…

It might sound as if I’m talking specific about offline blackjack in this post, but not at all. I think even when playing online it is important to recreate that blackjack feeling as much as you possibly can. Now if that means buying a big table to put your computer on then so be it. Your environment changes your mindset and the way you play, so it’s good to set yourself up in a comfortable manner.

Last week, for example. Usually I play on my lap in the living room, if only to keep my wife company. Well, as the colder nights drew in she began to head upstairs to bed a little earlier, leaving me all alone with just the computer. I decided to see if my luck would change with my environment, and started playing on my huge dining room table. Guess what? My luck changed.

So I now have my own little blackjack headquarters ready for whenever I want to play. If I’m being honest, I’m playing less, because I have to ‘feel’ it when I want to have a good, but the results when I do play are great. I think all you need in life is a kitchen table, the periodic table, and a good old sturdy blackjack table!
